He is Board Certified in General Adult Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry & Board Eligible in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Ghafoor has over 25 years of experience in treating patient suffering from psychiatric &/or substance use disorders. He specializes in medical detoxification of patients with alcohol and drug dependence and treatment of patients with co-occurring disorders. He has a very active practice in various clinical settings and has served in several leadership positions (Medical Director, President of Medical Staff) at all 3 hospitals where he has worked over the last 20 years.Dr. Ghafoor is an active member of the: American Psychiatric Association (APA) Arizona Psychiatric Society (APS) American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) & American Academy of Psychiatry & the Law (AAPL). He is the Past President of the Arizona Psychiatric Society (2012- 13) and has been appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine Phoenix. He is a Consultant to the Arizona Medical Board.

Dr. Akhter opened and successfully ran one of the first Alcohol & Substance Abuse Treatment Center in his native country before coming to the USA. He completed his psychiatric residency at University of Texas at Houston in 1997. Since then, he has been actively engaged in providing psychiatric and substance abuse treatment in various clinical settings. For last several years, he has been working as an Attending Psychiatrist at the Valley Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Akhter has not only treated thousands of individuals with serious psychiatric conditions but also those needing medical detoxification for alcohol and substance abuse dependence. He currently serves as the Medical Director of Adult Psychiatric Services at Valley Hospital.

Dr. Akhter is a certified Suboxone prescriber. His key area of professional interest is treating individuals who are dually diagnosed with mental illness and alcohol/substance abuse issues.

Dr. Akhter is a highly experienced psychiatrist who specializes in treating individuals with serious mental illness and those struggling with a combination of mental health problems and alcohol & substance abuse issues.
